This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake features tender, juicy hamburger patties baked in a creamy, savory gravy with onions for a comforting, hearty dinner.

  • Hamburger Steaks:
  • 2 lbs ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • Creamy Gravy:
  • 3 tbsp butter (salted or unsalted)
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth (low sodium preferred)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, gently mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, diced onion, salt, and pepper.
  2. Form into 6–8 oval-shaped patties and set aside while preparing gravy.
  3. Brown patties in an oven-safe skillet for 3–4 minutes per side until golden; remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, sauté sliced onions in butter. Add flour and stir 2 minutes.
  5. Whisk in beef broth and heavy cream until smooth.
  6. Nestle patties into gravy, cover tightly, and bake at 350°F for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake 15 more minutes.
  7. Remove from oven and let rest 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use a Dutch oven if you don’t have an oven-safe skillet.
  • Check patty doneness with a meat thermometer for best results.
