This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake features tender, juicy hamburger patties baked in a creamy, savory gravy with onions for a comforting, hearty dinner.
Ingredients
- Hamburger Steaks:
- 2 lbs ground beef (80/20 blend)
- ½ cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 onion, finely diced
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- Creamy Gravy:
- 3 tbsp butter (salted or unsalted)
- 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth (low sodium preferred)
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 onion, sliced
- 1 tsp garlic powder
Instructions
- In a large bowl, gently mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, diced onion, salt, and pepper.
- Form into 6–8 oval-shaped patties and set aside while preparing gravy.
- Brown patties in an oven-safe skillet for 3–4 minutes per side until golden; remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, sauté sliced onions in butter. Add flour and stir 2 minutes.
- Whisk in beef broth and heavy cream until smooth.
- Nestle patties into gravy, cover tightly, and bake at 350°F for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake 15 more minutes.
- Remove from oven and let rest 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Use a Dutch oven if you don’t have an oven-safe skillet.
- Check patty doneness with a meat thermometer for best results.
- Leftovers reheat well for next-day meals.
